One of the most striking findings in Reuters Institute's 2023 Digital News Report was the changing relationship between news consumption and social media, partly influenced by the decline of Facebook and the rise of TikTok and Instagram.

However, despite the growing fragmentation of short-form video social networks, the Institute's data shows, more clearly than ever, how the shift from Facebook and Twitter to TikTok and Instagram is strongly influenced by Gen Z and millennials, who have grown up with social media and pay more attention to creators than they do to traditional news outlets.

So what can news organizations do to adapt? Embrace a creator-led model for news reporting and support a new generation of journalists like @kylascan or @sophiasgaler who can produce news content that resonates on TikTok and Instagram.
